Large golden sunflowers fill the foreground while flowing layers of teal, turquoise, blue, and warm gold create an imaginative mountain landscape behind them.

I especially loved creating the contrast in this piece — the brilliant orange and yellow flowers against those deep, cool blues — and playing with the impression of many different textures and patterns throughout the landscape.

It is colorful, joyful, and just abstract enough to let the imagination wander.

The Story Behind the Art

I created this piece around the same time as Follow the Shimmering Road, and once again, sunflowers brought me back to an earlier chapter of my life.

Years ago, when I lived in Colorado, I opened a store called SunSeeds.

When it came time to decorate the space, I decided to make sunflowers part of its identity. I spent many hours painting sunflower designs on the walls, surrounding the store with those big, warm, cheerful blooms.

The store itself has been gone for many years, but I still remember that time fondly.

So when I found myself creating sunflowers again, I simply enjoyed returning to those colors — the glowing yellows and oranges, the rich blues and teals, and the wonderful energy that happens when they are placed together.

There was no complicated message behind this one.

I was simply enjoying myself.

And sometimes, that is reason enough to create something.

For me, Sunflower Memories carries a little piece of that old store, those painted walls, and the pleasure of making something bright and beautiful simply because it feels good to do so.
