A majestic Savannah live oak twists beneath a glowing crescent moon and swirling, star-filled sky in this richly colored night landscape. What began as a daytime scene gradually revealed what it wanted to become—a playful nod to Van Gogh and to the unexpected places creativity can lead.

About Your Canvas

An ancient live oak stretches its intricate branches across a deep blue Savannah sky while a golden crescent moon, scattered stars, and luminous swirls bring the evening to life.

The scene feels both unmistakably Savannah and wonderfully dreamlike.

And, as often happens with my art, it did not begin with a plan.

The Story Behind the Art

When I started this piece, I was simply creating a large Savannah live oak in a daytime landscape.

As I worked, I became absorbed in the branches. They grew more intricate and expressive, twisting and reaching across the image.

At some point I looked at what was emerging and thought:

This would be so much better at night.

So I began darkening everything.

Then the moon appeared.

A few stars seemed like a good idea.

And almost immediately came the next thought:

Starry Night in Savannah!

Well… once that arrived, there was no turning back. 😄

I began adding swirls to the sky and allowing the whole image to become an unmistakable little salute to Vincent van Gogh.

Now, when customers at the park recognize the reference, I tell them they are extremely fortunate because I do not price mine like a Van Gogh.

That usually gets a laugh.

But underneath the joke is something I love about this piece. I never sat down intending to create it this way. I was simply playing with an image of a live oak and paying attention as one idea led naturally to the next.

It felt almost as though the painting knew what it wanted to become before I did.

Starry Night in Savannah is, for me, a reminder of what can happen when I stop trying to control the creative process and simply follow where it wants to lead.
