A field of brilliant red poppies stretches beneath a deep, luminous sky, surrounded by rich magentas, blues, and teal shadows.
The scene has the feeling of a memory transformed by time — vivid in some places, dreamlike in others.
And for me, that is exactly what it is.
I created this piece after an old memory from my childhood kept returning to me.
I was probably about four years old when my parents and I went into the countryside to spend the afternoon with a couple they knew. They had a little girl about my age, and after everyone had eaten a picnic together, she and I disappeared into an enormous field of red poppies.
I can still remember us running through that field, laughing and giggling, completely absorbed in the joy of the moment.
No worries. No plans. No awareness of time.
Just two little girls running through what seemed like an endless sea of red flowers and having the time of their lives.
It is such a simple memory, yet somehow it has remained with me all these years.
When I created this painting, I wasn’t trying to reproduce that afternoon exactly. Instead, I let the memory become something more dreamlike — almost as though I were seeing it again through the distance of many years.
For me, Running Through the Poppies carries the feeling of childhood freedom, innocence, laughter, and those fleeting moments of happiness that somehow stay alive inside us forever.
If dust gathers on your canvas, gently wipe it with a clean, slightly damp cloth.
